GREENE – Two contractors split bids Monday night for Greene’s road-maintenance duties for this year.
Rejecting a flex-pave option because of the high expense, the selectmen decided to hot-top five town roads, dividing the work load between Commercial Paving & Recycling Co. of Scarborough and RC & Son Paving Co. of Lewiston.
Barrell Shop Road will be rebuilt with the proper ditches, culverts and grating before it is paved by Commercial Paving. Commericial will also pave Richard Street and two sections of College Road.
The Patten Road and North River Road jobs were both awarded to RC & Son.
The combined cost of the paving projects is $240,237, leaving approximately $10,000 in reserve for possible cleanup issues.
The reserve could go toward ditch issues on Longley Road, which Town Manager Stephen Eldridge said need addressing.
Selectmen confirmed with both contractors that driveway aprons are part of bid prices. All money not used would roll back into surplus for next year.
Selectmen Chair Ron Grant said the roads would be paved by winter.
In other business, the board voted to keep the mill rate at $18.30, the same as last year, with an overlay of $24,002.21.
The overlay is used to accommodate calculation mistakes or payments that need go back to taxpayers. Any leftover overlay “automatically rolls into surplus,” Eldridge said.
The selectmen commended the school board, Board of Directors, Budget Committee, and the superintendent for their efforts to keep a feasible fiscal budget, and allowing the mill rate to stay the same. This year’s school budget rose only 2 percent.
Eldridge reported that the total property valuation for the town increased approximately $5.4 million this year.
