JAY – The Police Department talked about high-speed chases and showed a video of one at the second in a series of community meetings Tuesday night.

Jay Patrolman Roy Hodsdon and Chief Larry White showed a police pursuit that occurred a couple years ago. The nearly 20-minute chase from Jay to Wilton was captured by a camera mounted on the dashboard of the Jay cruiser.

The person driving the pickup truck dodged in and out of both lanes, cut through a gas station and restaurant parking lot. The truck reached speeds of more than 60 mph.

“It might look like fun, but it’s not,” Hodsdon said. “It involves a lot of responsibility and thinking.”

Hodsdon explained police procedures used during the chase, and Chief White spoke about mistakes that were made. White said a dispatcher left the chief on hold and prevented him from communicating with the officer in the pursuit.

Both Hodsdon and White pointed out the criminal offenses the person behind the wheel was making and named some of the felonies he was charged with.

White and Hodsdon said they were pleased with the communication between the townspeople and themselves.

“We need to be involved as a community,” Hodsdon said.

Meetings will be held every month at the Jay community building and both Hodsdon and White urged the public to attend.
