Voters at the recent Rumford town meeting, as reported in the Sun Journal June 9, rejected a new fire station. Rumford voters had only the one article, up or down. It went down, signifying the clear opposition of citizens to the present plan for a new fire station.

No alternatives were presented at the town meeting. Now the Rumford Fire Department has nothing.

As a Rumford citizen, I think we should explore and discuss alternative plans. One citizen has suggested locating a substation in an industrial park building. Another wants a place near the coming development zone in the town. Still another citizen suggests we keep the present fire station and add only a substation.

Should there be 12-hour shifts instead of bedrooms in a new station?

Cutting some of the proposed options would reduce the price of the station.

What is the solution? What is possible? What is necessary?

To respect the will of Rumford voters and to learn what they are really thinking, we should open up the discussion of the new fire station with an eye for alternative plans.
