I am writing to express my extreme disappointment with the Sun Journal’s coverage of the 36th annual state Special Olympics games in Orono, June 10-12.

Relegating this event to a 2-by-3-inch column in a space normally reserved for corrections and omissions is a slap in the face to the athletes, families and volunteers who commit countless hours to preparation for these games. The Sun Journal’s coverage shows a disconnect between the paper and the communities it serves. Articles on bear attacks and unlisted phone numbers in New England had more coverage.

My friends, John and Bonnie Hess of Lewiston, brought home three gold medals, and I know that there were hundreds of medals and ribbons awarded to athletes from the Sun Journal readership area.

To all of the athletes from Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties, I’d like to say congratulations. You make us proud.
