State crews say they will do their best to keep traffic impacts on Sabattus Street to a minimum this week.
“As much as possible, they’ll only be shutting down one lane at a time,” said David Lycette, resident engineer for the Maine Department of Transportation. “And then again, they’ll try and do it on the side that’s getting the least use at the time.”
That means that crews will be shutting down one of two of the lanes heading out of Lewiston during the morning rush hour and one of the two lanes heading into the city during the afternoons.
Crews will be widening the street, rebuilding the shoulders and sidewalks and installing new storm sewer catch basins as well as replacing traffic signals at Russell Street and Fairlawn Avenue.
Lycette said the crews should be able to keep the work to one lane at a time through the middle of August. Paving work will force crews to close an entire side at a time through September, he said.
