The column titled “Downeast slaughter” (June 20) by V. Paul Reynolds was the equivalent of a journalistic lynching.

In his column, Mr. Reynolds claimed that coyotes killed some 21 deer in a deer yard along the St. Croix River in Washington County.

This story, which was previously reported in another publication, cited coyote snaring advocates who claimed that coyotes were to blame. The only problem with their claims is that they were, and are, totally unsubstantiated. The deer, unfortunately, went through thin ice on the St. Croix River and drowned.

Mr. Reynolds is a card-carrying member of the good-old-boy hook and bullet crowd. They’re the same ones who are waging a campaign against the bear referendum based on false information and scare tactics. The truth doesn’t matter. What matters to them is maintaining their power and keeping control of fish and wildlife management in Maine. The handwriting is on the wall and their days of having a total monopoly with regard to Maine’s fish and wildlife policies are numbered.

Mr. Reynolds is not a journalist. He is a propagandist. His column is pure propaganda not worthy of being called journalism. It belongs in the newspaper under the heading “Paid Advertisement.”
