This is in response to letters to the editor regarding honor speeches given at the ELHS graduation.

Having attended this graduation, I am in total agreement with Linda Pelletier’s letter (June 9) and Kalle Oakes’ column (June 15). I really couldn’t express myself any better. It was a great disappointment for me to hear the top honor students’ speeches on body functions, which I considered very inappropriate and offensive for such a special occasion for all family and friends of the graduates.

I don’t agree with Mr. Platz, valedictorian, that it was necessary to “confront the way that society shapes our behavior and actions.” Please consider that there is a rightful time and place for such.

My late husband was in education as a teacher and an administrator for the 40-plus years that we were married, so I have attended my share of graduations. Hopefully, next year’s graduating class will make us all proud with a more traditional ceremony.
