Have you noticed the saying on the columns of the “new” Auburn Hall, “No steps backward?”

Isn’t this ironic because Auburn continues to step backward. Compared to other communities, we are losing ground fast. How can we continue to allow the city manager to waste the taxpayers’ money on downtown?

Travel to surrounding communities and visit their high schools. Then go to Edward Little. It is embarrassing. It is evident that these other towns find that the welfare and the safety of their children are a priority. It seems as though the city of Auburn is not concerned that our children attend old schools that lack the facilities that most schools have. Now they talk at taking the more positive things away by removing police from the schools, cutting fire prevention programs and eliminating teachers.

The children are our future. How do we get the people at city hall to understand? They continue to cut programs that affect children but continue to spend our taxes downtown. How many millions of dollars will be spent on the city hall?

Our properties were re-appraised this last year. Please do not insult the intelligence of the taxpayers by saying you are not raising our taxes. Auburn citizens need to call for help. Who do we turn to? Who can stop this foolishness at city hall? Does anyone know?

We want to live in a safe community with our children and, hopefully, one day their children.

Janet Daigle, Auburn
