TURNER – Selectmen have approved a new impact study and analysis of the continuing rise in residential development in town.

The study will address various town services and what kind of upgrades may be needed for roads, fire and rescue, transfer station, administration and schools.

The study was approved at a cost of $7,470 and will be done by Planning Decisions of South Portland. There are currently more than 200 subdivision lots either approved or pending throughout the community.

The board is also seeking candidates for the Zoning Review Committee. With the completion of the new comprehensive plan, a committee will spend the next eight months amending ordinances and writing new ones reflecting the priorities in the comprehensive plan.

Selectmen are hoping to expand the spectrum of opinions on the new committee. Those who have served on several standing committees will be notified, but newer residents who might be interested are also being sought. They are asked to call the Town Office by July 6 and submit their names. Officials are hoping the new proposed ordinances can be ready for the 2005 town meeting.

In other business, selectmen:

• approved the purchase of a new highway/plow truck for $99,615 from Whited Ford in Auburn and a new copier for the Town Office at $151.50 per month for five years;

• voted to post No Parking areas along the Cobb Road by the Calvin Wells baseball fields, which will keep one lane open for emergency vehicles;

• activated the new pay raises and flex benefits for town employees approved at town meeting; and

• sent a reminder to residents that jumping from the Main Street bridge is not allowed. Several youngsters have been hurt.

The annual Fourth of July parade and celebration will be held in Turner Center with children’s games, food and strawberry shortcake.

Anyone wishing to participate in the parade is encouraged to do so. Coordinators are looking for antique cars, wagons, trucks or “anything else” people want to bring, said co-organizer Ralph Caldwell.

The parade begins at 10 a.m. Sunday. For information on parade participation phone Caldwell at 225-3871.
