MeadWestvaco update
RUMFORD – The next monthly Community Networking Meeting sponsored by the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Thursday, June 24. The meeting will be held at the Rumford Municipal Building’s conference room. The speaker will be Scott Reed, environmental manager at MeadWestvaco. Reed will have an update on the mill’s pollution prevention programs. This meeting is open to the public. More information, may be obtained by calling Healthy Communities at 364-7408.
Churches combine service
LOCKE MILLS – The congregations of Locke Mills Union Church and Rumford Point Congregational Church will have a combined service at Locke Mills at 9 a.m. Sunday, June 27. After the service, there will be a brunch to bid farewell to the Rev. Michael Johnson after his 18 months as interim pastor. Community members are invited to join the two churches for the service and potluck brunch. There will be no Sunday service at Rumford Point Congregational Church on June 27. Services will resume on Sunday, July 4, at Rumford Point at the usual 10:30 a.m. time and at Locke Mills at 9 a.m., when the Rev. Franklin Haynes will be welcomed to the pulpit.
Track sign-up
DIXFIELD – Summer track sign-up will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, June 28, at the field behind the SAD 21 superintendent’s office for district students ages 5 to 14. More information may be ontained by calling 562-8694. Volunteers are needed.
Kids’ camp grant
The River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition has again secured funding to offer camperships for local children ages 5-12 to attend Greater Rumford Community Center Day Camp.
A grant from the Agnes M. Lindsay Trust will help pay for the camperships. The camperships, for up to four weeks, are available to River Valley children who might not otherwise be able to afford the $60 weekly fee to attend. Campership applications may be obtained by calling Healthy Communities at 364-7408 or sending e-mail to [email protected].

Healthy Beginnings grant
RUMFORD – The Western Maine Healthy Beginnings Program recently received a $500 mini-grant from the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition to procure educational baby cups and brochures that convey the consequences of second hand cigarette smoke in a non-threatening and helpful way.
Western Maine Healthy Beginnings founded in 1995, is a program of Community Concepts Inc. It is grant funded annually by the Office of Substance Abuse/Maine Department of Human Services.
Healthy Beginnings distributes canvas totes filled with baby kits and information for referrals or available community resources to the birthplaces at both the Rumford Community Hospital and to Stephens Memorial Hospital.
