BRUNSWICK – The Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum on the Bowdoin College campus will conduct docent-led tours every Wednesday morning during July and August.
The hour-long tours will begin at 10:15 a.m. and are open to people of all ages.
Visitors will discover how much a polar bear weighs, how a caribou stays warm and how a musk ox defends its young. They will learn about Peary’s expeditions and discovery of the North Pole and will view the exhibit “Treasures and Trinkets: Collecting Culture in the North.”
Special touch box activities and games will be available for young children.
The Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum, named for Arctic explorers and Bowdoin College graduates Robert E. Peary and Donald B. MacMillan, is a center for the study of human cultures and natural environments found in the Arctic regions. The museum’s collections include arctic exploration gear, natural history specimens and artifacts and drawings made by Inuit and Indians of North America.
Located on the main floor of Hubbard Hall on the Bowdoin campus, the museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. The museum is closed Mondays and national holidays. Museum admission and tours: free. FMI: call (207) 725-3416.
