PASCOAG, R.I. – Brother Gerard C. Laflamme, S.C., (Brother Aubin) 80, of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Provincial House, Pascoag, R.I., died Thursday, June 24, at Overlook Nursing Center.
Born in Biddeford, he was the son of the late Albert Laflamme and Marie-Anne (Binette) Laflamme.
Brother Gerard entered the Brothers of the Sacred Heart at Arthabaska, Quebec, Canada, in August, 1940 and graduated from the Brothers’ Juniorate in 1943. Brother Gerard pronounced his first vows at Arthabaska on Aug. 15, 1943, and his final vows in 1949, at Victoriaville, Quebec.
Brother Gerard completed a Normal School Certificate from the Quebec Education Department, and a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics from Saint Michael’s College, Colchester, Vt.
Brother Gerard also completed graduate courses at the University of Maine, Orono, Boston College, and Fairfield University. In addition, Brother Gerard studied Sacred Scripture over the course of 10 summers at Trinity College, Burlington, Vt., Saint Michael’s College, Colchester, Vt., and Assumption College, Worcester, Mass.
Brother Gerard began his educational career in Victoriaville, Province of Quebec, Canada, before coming to the United States in 1946. His teaching ministry included assignments at St. Peter’s School, Lewiston, St. Louis School, Nashua, N.H., Precious Blood School, Woonsocket, R.I., Notre Dame High School, Fitchburg, Mass., and St. Dominic Regional High School, Lewiston.
At St. Dominic Regional High School, Brother Gerard served as Guidance Counselor for 18 years. Brother Gerard also served as Local Director of Brothers’ communities at St. Peter’s Residence, Lewiston, St. Francis Mission, Greene, the Provincial House, Pascoag, R.I., and St. Dominic Residence, Lewiston. Brother Gerard completed his ministry to youth by serving as Assistant Librarian at Bishop Guertin High School, Nashua, N.H., and as a volunteer at St. Dominic High School. In 1993, he retired to the Provincial House, Pascoag, R.I., where he served as receptionist until his death.
Brother Gerard completed the Spiritual Renewal Session at the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, Rome, Italy, in 1962-1963, and the Summer Renewal Program at Belvidere, N.J., in 1980. Brother Gerard was an active member of the Religious Brothers’ Conference, regularly attending their annual conferences beginning in 1990.
Brother Gerard is survived by his siblings and their spouses, Mrs. Jeannette Desneiges Grenier, Mrs. Laurette Pothier, Mr. Herve Laflamme, Mr. Gaston Laflamme, Mrs. Rachel Tourigny, Mrs. Youlande Langevin, Mrs. Pauline Lariviere, Mrs. Priscille Rouselle, and Mr. Fernand Laflamme.
He was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Laflamme.
