LIVERMORE FALLS – SAD 36 directors approved a $60,452 three-year bus lease Thursday night. The new bus will enable the district to transport all students in one run, instead of two, to save fuel.

Superintendent Terry Despres stressed that the starting times for each school in the fall had not been confirmed. About 8:05 a.m. has been suggested, he said, but times cannot be set until the bus scheduling has been completed.

Overall, the length of the school day will not change, he said, but the length of the teacher time will.

A meeting for parents will be held late in July, once the scheduling is done, and parents will be able to ask questions about bus runs, hours, safety and other issues.

In addition to having an educational technician on each bus, Despres said he hopes to enlist older students as peer helpers so they will realize “younger kids are part of our responsibility.”

In other action, the board again signed the warrants for the assessment of taxes to the towns of Livermore and Livermore Falls.

This had been done once but had included, in error, the $50,000 payment the district agreed on to bring down $150,000 indebtedness of the food service program.

The error did not change the numbers, but it corrected the appearance that the towns were being assessed for the $50,000 payback, which they were not.

Approval was also given to enter into a three-year lease, if needed, to purchase a new $9,850 tractor. If the funds are available at the end of the fiscal year, the tractor will be paid in cash.

A security alarm system was approved and Despres said he is working on a grant from Homeland Security funds, which will be used in all three schools. The primary goal is to keep the buildings safe, he said.

Approval was given to the Class of 2005 for their trip to Orlando, Fla., on May 11, 2005. Making the presentation to the board were class President Jenna Collins, and Treasurer Wendy Davis.

The class is raising money for the trip, which will cost $730 per student. “We’re a pretty tight class, we want everybody to be able to go,” Collins said. They plan to have six to 10 chaperones.
