Every day I hear people complaining about the ineffectiveness of local, state and federal government in dealing with issues that are most pertinent to the everyday citizen – the economy and taxes being at the top of the list. Even when a referendum is passed, our elected officials find a way of not following through or delaying the action.

People seem to be unaware of the fact that changes will not occur unless we elect new individuals who will listen to their constituents and their needs.

Such a change could have occurred had the citizens of Lewiston elected Paul Madore. Paul is a genuine, caring and honest individual with strong beliefs and values who is not afraid to state where he stands on issues and will not change his stance to impress whomever he is speaking to.

Is he prejudiced, as letter writers have indicated? Of course, aren’t we all. It’s part of human nature. The big difference is he is upfront with his feelings. He is not afraid to take a position on tough, controversial issues. Can you say that of any other politician?

If the media and individuals from outside our fine city would stop trying to smear any candidate that is not part of the “in group,” we would end up with better representatives – not hand-picked people who will play follow the leader. Maybe then, and only then, will our city shine and not be ignored as Portland, Augusta and Bangor grow.
