COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Maine racewalkers worked their magic again in the most important championship of the season – the Junior National Track and Field Championships at Texas A&M’s Anderson Track and Field Complex.
Troy Clark, Lisbon, Danny Campbell, Caribou, and Carly Lochala, New Sharon, took third, fifth, and eighth place, respectively, in their 10-kilometer races to earn a total of three National Team memberships and three All-American awards.
The Maine racewalkers have collected 14 All-American awards this year. Padric Gleason, of Dresden, finished in ninth, one place out of medal contention in the boys’ race.
University of Maine at Farmington sophomore Kate Dickinson of South Berwick was disqualified while in contention for a medal.
Clark and Campbell will travel as members of the US Junior Team to compete against the Canadian Junior Team in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in August.
Lochala will travel with her high school coach, Kelley Cullenberg, to the Olympic Training Center at Chula Vista, Calif., to participate in a week-long invitational USATF elite Junior Women’s Track & Field and Racewalking training camp in July.
Dickinson and Gleason will be competing in the Junior Olympics Nationals in Eugene, Ore., in July.
Various local and regional racewalk meets will be held in Maine during the summer. For further information contact www.meusatf.org.
Racewalking notes: The Maine racewalkers were originally planning to compete at the Junior Nationals in Buffalo at relatively small cost for travel. The Buffalo games committee was unable to conduct the meet, and were forced to cancel at the last minute. Fortunately, Texas A&M volunteered to host the meet at much greater cost to the Maine contingent. Thanks to the generosity of the USATF Club sports program and Racewalk International (RWI), additional funds were made available to help defray the added costs of the trip.
