Cancer fund-raiser
FARMINGTON – The Maine Elks Association is collecting used cell phones to raise money for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program and to help preserve the environment. Phones to Fight Kid’s Cancer is a program in which the Elks receive a monetary donation for each phone they collect. Used cell phones may be left at the Farmington Elks Lodge on School Street in West Farmington from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays. Phones donated through the fund-raising program are rebuilt and sold to developing nations. Phones may also be mailed to Bob Godin at P.O.Box 652, Skowhegan, ME 04976. Art exhibit

Bean dinner
NEW SHARON – New Sharon Congregational Church will hold a take-out bean dinner from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 3. Rummage sale
LIVERMORE FALLS – A rummage and food sale will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 3, at the First Baptist Church. Proceeds from the sale will benefit missions projects sponsored by the American Baptist Women.

Strawberry Festival
RANGELEY – Oquossoc’s Town Park will once again be the site of the Rangeley region guides’ and sportsmen’s annual Strawberry Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 8. More than 400 shortcakes will be prepared with freshly picked local berries and topped with fresh whipped cream. Bob Daviau will again cook up his sausage-and-pepper sandwiches and the Girl Scouts will help with beverages. A bake sale table will return with cakes, cookies and pies. Throughout the park, 60 vendors from across the region are expected to set up their wares. The area’s largest yard sale will be held on the roadway between the firehouse and the park, which will be closed to traffic. The Little Miss Strawberry contest will be held throughout the day, and people will have the opportunity to cast a vote from the photos on display. Profits will help the many programs on this year’s agenda of the Rangeley Region Guides’ and Sportsmen’s Association.

Papers available
FAYETTE – Nomination papers are available at the Town Office for the elected positions of selectman, assessor and overseer of the poor. The filing deadline is before 2 p.m. Friday, July 16. Papers may be picked up during regular business hours.
GOP committee to meet
WILTON – The Franklin County Republican Committee met recently to make plans for the summer months. Russ Black, the county chairman, led the meeting. Seven towns were represented at the meeting. The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 23, at the Wilton Town Office. The August meeting will be a potluck cookout at 5 p.m. Aug. 22 at the home of Roger Lambert in Strong. Plans for the Farmington Fair will be discussed at the meetings, and jobs will be assigned. Fund-raising will be a priority. All town chairmen are welcome to attend the meetings.
Military honor roll
INDUSTRY – The town of Industry is collecting names to place on a military honor roll, which will include any town resident who served in the military from the Civil War to present. STRONG – The Strong Water District, as required by the federal Safe Drinking Water Act of 1996, has released its sixth annual consumer confidence report. This report details the source of the water, its quality, and the results of tests in the preceding year. People who have concerns about the safety of the district’s water may call the Safe Drinking Water hot line at 1-800-426-4791. Any customer of the Strong Water District who has not received a copy of the report or who would like extra copies may call Betty Whittemore at 684-3875 and leave a message. The report is also posted on Maine Rural Water Association’s Web site.
