CARTHAGE – A Carthage man is in critical condition Monday at a Lewiston hospital after his car struck a large tree early Sunday.

Maine State Police Trooper Mathew Casavant said Wallace Virgin, 51, was discovered in his 1991 Honda Civic on Track Road, a dirt road off Cemetery Road, which is off Route 142.

The accident was reported at 5:45 a.m. by one of the neighbors but Casavant said he believes the accident happened about 4 a.m.

Virgin was heading north on Track Road when the vehicle left the road, the trooper said.

The vehicle “slammed” into a large tree, Casavant said.

Wilton Fire Department members extricated Virgin from his vehicle, he said.

Carthage Fire Department and Franklin County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene as well.

Med-Care ambulance service out of Mexico responded to treat Virgin. He was taken by air ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Casavant said.

A hospital spokeswoman said Monday that Virgin was listed in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing, Casavant said.
