OTISFIELD – Howard P. Whittum, 72, of Bradenton, Fla., and Otisfield died Monday, July 12, at his summer residence after a long battle with melanoma.

He was born in Newton, Mass., on Dec. 28, 1931, the son of Howard A. and Marion Whittum. He was a graduate of Newton High School and Marlboro College in Vermont. After his schooling he was drafted into the U.S. Navy.

He lived in Cumberland, and worked for Commercial Union Insurance Co. as a claims supervisor until his retirement in 1994 after 33 years. He and his wife moved to Florida in 1997.

Over the years, Mr. Whittum had a keen interest in the outdoors, enjoying fishing, hunting and skiing. Since his retirement he has enjoyed golf and gardening, especially at his summer home on Thompson Lake in Otisfield. His big joy was spending time with his family. He and his wife were members of the Norway Country Club.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Dolores E. Whittum, of Bradenton, Fla., and Otisfield; a son, Jeffrey P. Whittum, of Cumberland; a daughter, Susan L. Whittum Obar, of North Yarmouth; a sister, Edythe Puglia, of Otisfield; and four grandchildren.
