SAD 21 board meeting postponed
DIXFIELD – A meeting of the regular SAD 21 School Board has been postponed from Monday, July 12, to 6 p.m. Monday, July 19, at Dirigo Middle School. Since merging with the town of Peru in a consolidating move this spring, the district has had two school boards operating simultaneously. One is the Consolidated School Board, which consists of representatives from the merged district’s towns of Canton, Carthage, Dixfield and Peru. The regular board, which will cease next summer when the consolidated board takes over, comprises directors from Canton, Carthage and Dixfield. The consolidated board regularly meets on the fourth Monday of the month; the regular board on the first Monday of the month.
White Mountain Ranger program
GORHAM, N.H. – The White Mountain National Forest’s Wednesday Night With A Ranger program on July 14 features Wilderness Ranger Dave Neely presenting “Wilderness in the White Mountains.” This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, the law that protects areas designated by Congress, allowing ecosystems to function naturally and providing opportunities for solitude, challenge and scientific study. The White Mountain National Forest supports 114,000 acres of wilderness and is studying the possibility of additional wilderness acres. Neely will share stories from his years of wilderness visits, and describe the special management, regulations, and enduring wilderness values to be found in these special places. Ranger programs are presented by the Forest Service every Wednesday evening beginning at 8 p.m. at the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Pinkham Notch Visitor Center on Route 16, 11 miles south of Gorham. Programs are free, and all local residents, campers and visitors are welcome. Programs are about an hour long and include time for conversation about the evening’s topic or any other national forest issue. Free popcorn is served. RUMFORD – The Cameron For Senate committee has its next meeting in Jay at Lafleur’s Restaurant on July 14 with a social from 6 to 7 p.m. and a meeting to follow. Mollyockett Day
BETHEL – On Saturday, July 17, the Mahoosuc Arts Council will sponsor Mollyockett Day, an annual community event honoring Mollyocket, a Pequawket Indian who lived among the early settlers of Western Maine. Mollyockett Day is an annual attraction for thousands of Maine residents and vacationers since 1960. Mollyockett Day features a parade, races of all kinds, a road race, a bed race, and a duck race, arts and crafts, great entertainment, plenty of food, a frog jumping contest and fireworks at dusk. Mollyockett Day kicks off with the Key Bank Mollyockett Day Classic Road Race at 8:30 a.m. with 1km, 3km and 5km run and walk categories for all ages. The parade begins at 11 a.m. with this year’s theme “Folk and Fairy Tales” promising lots of fanciful floats. The bandstand on the Bethel Common is the site of the crowning of this year’s “Princess Mollyocket” as well as an array of entertainment featuring Roger Tincknell, Songs for Kids, the Mahoosuc Community Band, the Muddy Marsh Ramblers, the 8th annual Old Time Fiddlers contest at 5:30 p.m., and Malinda Liberty and the Silver & Lace Band at 7:30 p.m. There is also the 22nd annual Western Maine Frog Jumping contest, an Adirondack chair auction, and the duck race at the Artist’s Covered Bridge on the Sunday River. Telstar car show
BETHEL – The 4th annual Telstar High School Car show will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 17 in Bethel. Admission costs $5 for a car, driver and one passenger; for spectators, $2 for adults and $1 for students. There will be food, music, and door prizes. Vendors are welcome. Trophies will be awarded for the top three in each class: cars, trucks and others. Also, trophies will be given for Telstar alumni, best paint, best engine, best of show and peoples’ choice.
