Fifty-eight-year-old Mike Brooks of Auburn is expected to finish his Death Valley trek Wednesday morning. He was shooting for an 8 a.m. finish of the Kiehl’s Badwater Ultramarathon in Death Valley, which he is running to raise money for Camp Sunshine.

Brooks’ standing after the first checkpoint Monday: 57th in a field of 72

Time it took to reach Darwin, about mile 90, on Tuesday: 22:55:00

Miles remaining after that checkpoint: 45

Prize for finishing the race in 48 hours: a belt buckle

Plans if he makes an early finish: Go back to the hotel, rest up, then, at 6 p.m. Wednesday hit the course again for a 20-hour run up and down Mount Whitney. That’s not part of the race; he’d do that just for kicks. – Kathryn Skelton and Mark LaFlamme
