WELD – The Webb Lake Association’s annual Fishing Contest will be Sunday, July 18. Registration will be from 7 to 8 a.m. at Dummers Beach. Fish must be brought in by 5 p.m. There is a $1 fee. Ice cream social

NEW PORTLAND – An ice cream social will be held Sunday, July 18, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Pease Memorial Hall (opposite the library). There will be chocolate and vanilla ice cream, banana splits and whipped cream, with an array of toppings. People can stop by on a warm Sunday afternoon for a treat. There also will be door prizes.

Free concert

FARMINGTON – Pianist Abigail Field will present a free concert from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 18, in Franklin Memorial Hospital’s Bass Room.

Field, who recently won a piano audition at the Rockport Opera House, will perform music by Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Debussy.

The accomplished 20-year-old chamber musician is a student of a world-wide performer, Yuri Funahashi. Field has also accompanied singers at the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition at Bates College and performed at Brown Bag concerts at UMF’s Nordica Auditorium.

Field also is a member of a piano trio that will be playing Beethoven at an upcoming evening for hospital patients.

Wilderness Survival’

RANGELEY – The Natural Science Program will present “Wilderness Survival” from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 18, at the Wilhelm Reich Museum (Orgonon) on Dodge Pond.

Maine master guide Ray Reitze Jr. and registered Maine guide Jennifer Ries will lead this workshop on practical survival skills in the woods. Both are instructors at the Earthways School of Wilderness Survival in Canaan. Reitze has 40 years experience teaching outdoor survival, canoeing, recreational guiding, and wilderness skills and philosophy. They will share information about staying alive and safe in the woods. There is no charge.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own compasses and to dress for the outdoor conditions. Sturdy shoes, bug spray and bottles of water are suggested. Workshops are held rain or shine.
