I am so disgusted with the vast number of people supporting an amendment to ban marriages between homosexual individuals. When I first heard of it, I thought for sure that it would be ignored and pushed aside. Little did I know how much people love to force their religion onto others.

I do not believe in God, and yet I could get married tomorrow and no one would object. Marriage means different things to different people. There are many who feel that no one should be able to marry twice or that wives should be completely subordinate to their husbands.

The people supporting an amendment for their beliefs would be laughed at, and yet so many agree with President Bush’s ridiculous idea. Why shouldn’t two people of any sex be able to make a lifelong commitment to each other in the form of marriage? Marriage has evolved as any other social institution has, and I am proud of the gay community for standing up for itself and recognizing that gay people deserve the right to marry.

I used to be so happy to live in such an accepting era. In 20 years, most Americans will be appalled that gays were actually denied the right to marry.

Let our generation be one devoid of bigotry and religion being forced upon people who don’t believe.

I respect others’ piety, but when not praying, those people need to open their eyes.
