This is in response to Robert Fisk Jr.’s guest column July 11 supporting the upcoming bear referendum. Having hunted for over 30 years, bear and deer, I found many inaccurate statements in that Op-Ed.

Baiting is a difficult and work-intensive process. No four-wheeler delivering to bait sites. Pure manpower and months of preparation. The stories Mr. Fisk relates are tall tales. The legal hunting age in Maine is 10. So much for the 8-year-old hunter.

A legitimate guide would seek a wounded animal. Guarantees are given for hunts. Bear dogs run $2,000 each. Who would beat an animal at that value?

I would like all Maine voters to visit the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife home page and click on 2004 bear referendum information.

My sons and I harvested three deer and two bears last year. Part of each animal was given to a needy Maine family.

What really upsets me is the money being wasted on this campaign that could be put to good use helping Maine families instead of taking away someone’s livelihood and other people’s recreation.
