Seniors hold crafts workshop
RUMFORD – The Rumford Senior Citizens will hold a workshop Friday, July 23, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. to work on crafts for the fair. Participants will be shown how to make latch-hook rugs and other crafts. The session is open to all members.
Program on using gizmos’ in forest
GORHAM, N.H. – White Mountain National Forest’s Wednesday Night with a Ranger program on July 21 features forester Dave Govatski presenting “Gizmos and Gadgets in the Forest – Do They Help or Hinder?” The discussion will include cell phones, GPS and a map and compass.
Ranger programs begin at 8 p.m. at the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Pinkham Notch Visitor Center on Route 16, 11 miles south of Gorham, N.H.
Programs are free and last about an hour. Free popcorn is served.

Weekly hikes start Friday
GORHAM, N.H. – The Androscoggin Ranger District is holding new Trail of the Week hikes in the White Mountain National Forest beginning Friday, July 23. People of all ages are invited to join a Forest Service ranger to explore a trail. Most hikes will be appropriate for beginners, according to the district.
Topics will include special outdoors skills, White Mountain history, native trees and common animals. The hikes are free and open to all. People are advised to dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, according to the district. Space is limited and reservations are required. People can call the ranger district at 603-466-2713 or TTY 603-466-2856 on the morning of the hike to reserve a spot.
The hike Friday will be on the Old Jackson Road to Lowe’s Bald Spot in the Great Gulf Wilderness. Participants will meet at the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center on Route 16 at 9:30 a.m. The hike is 4.6 miles round-trip and is of moderate difficulty. It will take about five hours. Participants should bring a lunch.
