“Sample root beer here,” called out a vender at one of the booths near the circus grounds yesterday. A farmer went up and drank a glass of the liquid and started to walk off.

“A nickel there, gent,” said the vendor. “But you said that it was “sample beer,” objected the drinker. “That’s just right, here’s where you get Dr. Sample’s celebrated root beer that is way ahead of Dr. Ayer’s,” sang out the man behind the stand as he pocketed the money.

50 Years Ago, 1954

One year after it was activated in the abandoned Garcelon School building at Sabattus Street and East Avenue, the 23rd Rifle Company Reserve now finds itself in a spacious, clean and well furnished brick building on Hammond Street, once the scene of operations by the Barker Division of the Knapp Bros. Shoe Mfg. Corp.

The handful of Marines, commanded by Captain Loren R. Smith, that set up initial operations at the Garcelon School building on July 22, 1954, now has grown to a group consisting of a permanent staff of two officers and eleven enlisted men, and a reserve company of three officers and 66 enlisted men.

25 Years Ago, 1979

She could have taken her talent to New York or Boston, but instead, Mrs. Conrad Lebel of Poland Road, Auburn, preferred to stay in this area. In so doing, she made thousands of brides happy by designing their “dream dress” for their “dream wedding.” “God given,” is how Mrs. Lebel thinks her talent and ability for creating wedding gowns. To date, she has made an estimated 5,000 wedding gowns and could not begin to guess at the number of gowns made for flower girls, attendants and mother of the bride.
