WEST PARIS – The town is going to get more money from the state this year to reduce taxes and improve roads, Town Manager Donald Woodbury told selectmen Thursday.
The estimated total from state revenue sharing and the Urban Rural Initiative Program is $166,808, or $18,474 more than last year.
Board Chairman Wade Rainey said the URIP money must be used for capital road improvements and state revenue sharing is traditionally used to help reduce taxes.
Both amounts will be coming to the town before the end of the year.
Tri-Town Ambulance and Rescue Service Chief Norman St. Pierre told selectmen the service has been approved for a grant of $15,038 from the federal Department of Homeland Security. It will pay for three Scott Air Packs and six air tanks for the Fire Department.
The town library has also received a grant of $3,750 from the Maine Community Foundation for an expansion project.
Rainey said both grants require voter approval.
“We have to ask the people to accept the grant moneys,” he said. “The selectmen can’t do it without their approval.”
A town meeting will be scheduled soon.
Woodbury also reported he has filed 83 tax liens from unpaid 2003 taxes totaling $53,677. After the 30-day notices were sent last month, he said $30,000 in unpaid 2003 taxes was received.
