Over two hundred excursionist from Berlin, N.H., were in Lewiston Sunday. They came down on a special train and from here went to Merrymeeting Park where a band concert was given in the afternoon by the Berlin Solo Band and the Brigade Band of this city. Returning late in the afternoon, many of the Berlin people spent some time in sight-seeing about Lewiston and Auburn before it was time to take their train home.

50 Years Ago, 1954

A baby hawk out for a stroll was the cause of an auto collision, Sunday afternoon, when drivers of two vehicles became interested in the little bird. Willard Mills, Auburn, who was driving a truck owned by Twin City Tire Co., spotted the bird on the edge of the highway and pulled out beside the road to see if he could catch it. In the meantime, Dale L. Carleton of Auburn, who was driving the truck, told police he was watching the hawk and failed to see that the truck had stopped in front of him. The front end of his car crashed into the back end of the truck, destroying a boat in the back of the truck and causing damage to both cars estimated at $150.

25 Years Ago, 1979

It’s hardly worth a line of precious newsprint to remind you that the great force behind the lofty prices of beef in ‘79 has been the light supply of cattle. But are you also fully aware of what this supply pattern has been doing to the prices of SHOES? Shoe prices are climbing sharply and will increase even more as the fall and winter fashions in shoes reach the stores in coming weeks. There is no other outlook, say spokesmen for such giants of shoe manufacturing in the U.S. as the St. Louis headquartered international Shoe Co. and the Bown Shoe Co. A spokesman for Brown, for instance, notes that the price of hides soared by 124 percent from April ‘78 to April ‘79. During this span, the wholesale prices of shoes rose 17.8 percent.
