OXFORD – Music comes naturally and abundantly to Eric Hanson, pastor of Hosanna Church in Oxford and owner of HIS Music publishing company.

His first musical instrument, the trumpet, was introduced into his life at 6 years old. He now plays guitar and sings.

“I got involved in every music thing, in and outside of college,” he said. “I became part of the Jesus Music Revolution. That was what Christian Music was called in the 70s.”

HIS Music also brings Christian performers to the area, and will present a concert by Barry McGuire on Wednesday, July 28, at the church.

Hanson’s father, Jimmy Hanson, was a well-known lead trumpet player for Rudy Vallee, for Fred Wearing and The Pennsylvanians, and was jazz soloist for the Saturday Night Swing Club.

“My dad made the jump from radio to television in the 1940s when television existed in New York and other larger cities, but not in Maine. He also ran the old’ Old Orchard Pier in the 50s, bringing in popular music performances,” he said.

“It was my goal to hit the big time and become rich and famous as a guitar player and singer,” Hanson said, but now “most of our concerts are done for love offerings that are pay-what-you-can donations.”

Hanson’s Christian music publishing company began in 1980 with the release of his first solo album. He has released five more since. Hanson had his own band, named Rejoice.

His wife, Nancy, sings with him, and many of their concerts are done for charity.

Some of his published songs have made it nationally. Of particular importance to Hanson is his song, “The Answer Is Yes.”

“This song has been sung by several hundred different choirs as far away as Hawaii,” he said. An anthem he wrote has been sung by the Eastern Nazarene College choir titled “Let There Be Light” at Vision New England’s Congress 93 in front of more than 6,000 people.

The appearance by Barry McGuire will be Wednesday, July 28, at 7:30 p.m. at Hosanna Church at 108 Schoolhouse Road in Oxford.

One of McGuire’s big hits was “Eve of Destruction,” which was recorded in 1965 and sold two million copies. His “Bullfrogs and Butterflies,” a song about being born again, has sold three million copies.

Tickets to McGuire’s concert are $5 in advance, $6 at the door.

Among the other Christian performers that HIS Music will bring to the Hosanna in the future are singers Randy Stonehill, Nancy Honeytree and Annie Herring.

The Hansons will soon be releasing a new album titled “Let There Be Light.” Their music may be purchased through HIS Music at 743-2965 or through the Bible Book Store in Auburn.
