AUBURN – Voters will be asked in the fall to approve bonds to build a new Lake Street Elementary School.

City councilors will discuss Monday whether to put the bond issue before voters in September or wait until November’s general election. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the Auburn City Building.

The city of Auburn and the state plan to share the $9.6 million cost of the project. The state is expected to contribute at least 42 percent and the city will sell bonds to pay for the rest. Voters could also be asked for another $690,000 to build a larger gymnasium and install air conditioning, bringing the total cost to $10.4 million.

The design calls for 17 classrooms, separate music and art spaces, and a room for science experiments and other projects spread out over three stories. The music, art, and science room would be on the basement level, while most offices, library, gym and cafeteria on the first floor and classrooms will be on the first and second floors.

Voters approved the plan in a February straw vote, and approved the design in a June straw vote.
