LEWISTON – Neurosurgeon Joel Ira Franck MD and engineer Ron Franklin have been issued a series of patents for a medical device called the “StarFix.”

According to Franck, the device improves the accuracy and efficiency of deep-brain stimulation procedures used to control and eliminate tremors in patients with movement disorders.

The StarFix is used by surgeons to implant tiny electrodes in the brains of patients suffering from a multitude of conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, and obsessive compulsive disorder, as well as many other movement disorders. It allows a surgeon to perform this procedure with an extraordinary degree of precision. Independent studies of the device have confirmed its accuracy.

The StarFix is manufactured by FHC of Bowdoinham. It is currently in use at major medical centers around the country.
