OXFORD – An Oxford man who was out on bail for failing to register as a sex offender was arrested Saturday on a charge of assaulting a woman, police said.
Alden Mason, 32, of Yeaton Swamp Road, was arrested at 9 a.m. Saturday on charges of gross sexual assault, terrorizing, criminal threatening and violation of conditions of release, Oxford police Lt. Jon Tibbetts said.
The incident occurred at 4 a.m. Saturday, Tibbetts said, when Mason got into a fight with a woman.
The woman alleged she was raped, Tibbetts said. However, the gross sexual assault charge was dropped by the district attorney’s office during Mason’s arraignment proceedings in District Court on Monday, he said.
According to Oxford County Jail Sgt. Arlene Kerr, Mason was arraigned on charges of terrorizing and violation of conditions of release.
Tibbetts said Mason failed to register as a sex offender a few months ago, and had been out on bail after having been arraigned on that charge. A condition of his release on bail was that he not commit a crime.
As a convicted sex offender, Mason is required to register within 30 days of changing his address, Tibbetts said.
Kerr said Mason has been in the county jail since his arraignment. He was unable to meet bail, which was set at $750 in cash or $10,000 in secured property.
Tibbetts said the woman was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released.
