N EW YORK – Alex Rodriguez stole home and hit a long homer, Gary Sheffield also connected and the New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-4 Saturday.

Javier Vazquez lasted only 5 1-3 innings on a humid afternoon, but that was enough to improve to 9-2 in his last 14 starts.

He got plenty of help from the bullpen as four pitchers combined for scoreless relief the rest of the way.

New York has won 10 of 12 meetings with the Orioles this season, and 17 of 22 dating to last year.

Sheffield hit his 402nd homer and drove in two runs, and Rodriguez finished with three hits.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Jorge Sosa allowed two runs over five innings in his first start of the season and Robert Fick hit a two-run homer to lead the Tampa Bay Devil Rays over the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5.

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Jose Guillen hit a two-run walkoff homer in the 11th inning to give the Anaheim Angels a stunning 9-8 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

DETROIT – Cliff Politte walked Carlos Guillen to force in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Detroit Tigers beat the White Sox 3-2.

Reds -Astros split

CINCINNATI – Carlos Beltran and Mike Lamb hit ninth-inning homers, sending the Houston Astros to an 8-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds that ended a draining day.

It started with the Reds beating the Astros 3-2 in 13 innings, finishing a game suspended overnight because of rain.

Phillies 4, Cubs 3

CHICAGO -Mike Lieberthal and Bobby Abreu each hit two-run homers following Chicago errors, helping the Philadelphia Phillies end their five-game losing skid with a 4-3 victory over the Cubs.

Braves 8, Mets 0

ATLANTA – Jaret Wright stayed undefeated in July and Johnny Estrada homered to lead the Atlanta Braves past New York 8-0.

Pirates 4, Brewers 1

MILWAUKEE – Ryan Vogelsong started for the traded Kris Benson and threw five strong innings to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Milwaukee Brewers 4-1.

Expos 8, Marlins 5

MIAMI – Terrmel Sledge hit his first career grand slam after Paul Lo Duca hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat for Florida to lead the Montreal Expos over the Marlins 8-5.
