D TOWNSHIP – Leland John Kangas, 52, of Kangas Road, Greenwood, died Saturday, July 31, in D Township as the result of a motorcycle accident.

He was born Aug. 18, 1951, in Norway, the son of Eino H. & Lena Yates Kangas. He was educated in local schools. He had been employed at Harold Motors, Oxford, for 8 years; B & E Orchards for 15 years; and for the last 10 years, with the Town of Greenwood.

He married Debra Stevens on Aug. 18, 1972.

Leland was an avid hunter, and loved snowmobiling and four wheeling. He loved sports and coached youth sports, including baseball, basketball, softball and soccer. He had raced stock cars since he was 17.

He was a member of the Granite Lodge #182 AF & AM, and the Kora Temple Shrine. He was also a former member of the Sumner Fire Department and a present member of the Greenwood Fire Department. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, and the Athletic Boosters of Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.

He is survived by his mother of South Paris; his wife of 31 years, of Greenwood; one son, Billie Kangas of Greenwood; one daughter, Kimberly Kangas of Norway; two brothers, Arthur Kangas and his wife, Louise, of Sumner, and Richard Kangas and his wife, Louise, of Bryant Pond; one sister, Sandra Weitzel and her husband, Don, of Pine, Colo.; many nieces and nephews, and extended family, as well as his faithful dog, Shania.
