PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Offensive tackle Mike Williams was excused from the second of two Buffalo Bills’ practice sessions Monday for what the team referred to as personal reasons.

Without going into detail, team spokesman Scott Berchtold said Williams’ absence was not due to injury. He said coach Mike Mularkey indicated that the former first-round draft pick could be back for Tuesday’s session.

Berchtold said the player was still on the St. John Fisher College campus, the Bills’ training camp site in suburban Rochester.

Berchtold stressed that Williams’ absence had nothing to with his status on the team after he was demoted to second string when camp opened Sunday. Mularkey made the move to allow Williams time to better learn the offense after the player had missed several minicamp sessions in June because of a death in his family.

Mularkey said Sunday he expected Williams to eventually regain his starting job.

Selected fourth overall in the 2002 draft, Williams has been the Bills’ starting right tackle since the first game of his rookie season.

With a practice-time temperature of 88, and a cloudless sky, the heat took its toll on backup offensive lineman Richard Seals. He collapsed to one knee and required the help of two trainers to escort him to the team’s hydration tent about an hour into the 90-minute afternoon practice.

Berchtold said Seals would likely be treated on site and that his condition would be updated on Tuesday.

Notes: Two former Bills players, WR Charles Johnson and PK Mike Hollis, attended practice as guest coaches Monday. Johnson is a nine-year NFL veteran who hasn’t played since being released by Buffalo before last season. Bills president Tom Donahoe said Johnson was invited to learn about coaching and scouting, jobs he may pursue. … Hollis was invited to camp by coach Mularkey to work with the Bills kickers, Donahoe said. Hollis had back surgery and was waived by the New York Giants in March after missing all of last season when he hurt his back during training camp. He spent the 2002 season with the Bills. … The Bills have one practice session on Tuesday.
