DIXFIELD – Ludden Memorial Library began its summer reading program with Dixfield’s Citizen of the Year, Bitsy Ionta, doing a presentation of old-time playthings and a show of selected items borrowed from the Dixfield Historical Society. Thirty children and 10 parents were present.
Following the presentation, a craft project was completed in the community room of the library. In honor of the Fourth of July celebrations, a patriotic flying disk was made by the children. The project was done using colored plastic plates, plastic bags and glitter. The children were helped by library staff and parents as they worked on their own project.
Cookies, also with patriotic colored M and M’s, and punch were served at the program’s finish.
The week also marked the beginning of the reading part of the program where children sign up and record the number of books they read during the time period. Special papers to record stories that have been read were passed out and will continue to be passed out during the six-week period.
Children will receive stickers for every 10 books read. If a book report is passed in, a prize will be awarded.
Only one book report each week is needed, even though the child is encouraged to read several books.
Prizes will be awarded at the end of the reading program on Aug. 6, the day of the closing program.
