No more cooling drinks at Lake Grove Sundays; no more dishes of refreshing ice cream; no more fruit for the hungry pleasure seekers; even a bag of fresh roasted peanuts is prohibited. The proprietors of confectionery stores all over Auburn may now sleep Sunday morning. They will not have to get up and work at the soda fountain or the candy counter. Mayor A. Q. Miller and the Board of Aldermen have voted to instruct the city marshal to enforce the State law regarding business on the Sabbath.

A group of six boys sponsored by the Wayne-Leeds Fish and Game Association returned from the Maine Junior Guide Testing Camp, which was held this year at Bernis, on the lower end of Lake Mooselookmeguntic. The Maine Junior Guide Program was began in the mid-1930’s by an act of the Maine Legislature and up to this year has been primarily a summer camp activity.

A blackened row of washers and dryers inside a charred, dripping shell was all that remained of Beal’s Cleaners on Hampshire Street in Auburn, following a three-alarm early morning fire that may have been set. No one was injured in the blaze, but the two-story wood frame building and all clothing within was a total loss. The Warehouse, a wholesale shoe outlet adjoining the laundry, also suffered extensive water damage when its sprinkler system was activated. Beal’s owner’s Harry and Terry Badger of Auburn said their building and machinery assessed at $103,000, was “partially insured,” but said the clothes being processed at the time were not insured.
