The frustration and conflict surrounding efforts at tax reform in the closing days of the 121st Legislature received their fair share of publicity, but we at the Maine Children’s Alliance believe it is equally important to acknowledge that the governor and Legislature achieved significant progress in several areas critical to the well being of Maine’s children and families.

It is especially notable that our policy makers were able to continue the current levels of eligibility for health insurance at a time of budget crisis, including protection of the Dirigo health care plan. Maine is one of the very few states in the nation that maintained eligibility for Medicaid (MaineCare in Maine) as it builds toward providing universal access to quality health care and containing health care costs. More money was provided for education, while children’s services sustained comparatively minimal cuts, and positive first steps were taken toward creating a more effective and accountable government in the area of children’s services.

MCA works on behalf of all children to provide information to policy makers to help them develop good public policy. We strive to balance the interests of all children and families and remain committed to protecting the most vulnerable among Maine’s children, which includes efforts to establish efficient, effective and accountable family services.
