BAR HARBOR – The Maine Saxophone Quartet will present a program of premières by the College of the Atlantic’s composer in residence, John Cooper. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at the college. A reception follows the concert, which is a memorial for Philip Geyelin (1924-2004), a former editor of the Washington Post and a friend of the college’s.

Although the quartet plays works by the 20th century giants Ibert, Bozza and Vaughn-Williams, as well as transcriptions of composers such as J.S Bach and Handel, the concert will feature contemporary compositions by Cooper. Among them are two written to poems by the African-American poet Langston Hughes: the Maine première of “Lullaby and Lexicon Dance” written for the New York Saxophone Quartet and a joyful “Acadia Rag.”

The concert is free. For more information, call (207) 288-5015.
