FARMINGTON – Several town officials met Thursday to discuss plans for a regional transportation system in Franklin County, Town Manager Richard Davis said.

Managers from Turner, Jay, Kingfield and New Portland joined representatives from the Maine Department of Transportation, Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments, Western Maine Transportation and University of Farmington to discuss a plan for a regional bus system.

In its planning stages, officials hope to be able to offer an inter-city loop between Wilton and Farmington initially. Buses will stop at key places such as the hospital, Davis said.

The group will likely apply for a Department of Transportation matching grant, but it would require that matching funds are raised. Officials are working to secure the funding through non-tax sources via business donations. The fiscal requirements for the program have not been calculated to date.

If regional transportation becomes a reality in the future, it is not expected to happen for at least two years, Davis said.
