DIXFIELD – A girl expelled in eighth grade for participating in bomb threats has been allowed to resume her SAD 21 education in high school, said Superintendent Thomas Ward.

After a 30-minute executive session at the start of Monday night’s SAD 21 school board meeting at Dirigo High School, directors unanimously voted to allow the girl to re-enter as a sophomore.

Ward said the youth had been schooled elsewhere in her absence from SAD 21.

“She was in the middle of her eighth-grade year when she was expelled for her involvement with bomb threats,” Ward said Tuesday afternoon.

He said the youth has complied with all requirements set by SAD 21 directors, requirements that needed to be satisfied before re-entry would be considered.

In other business, Ward said he was “very pleased” with the new paving completed this summer at the high school parking lot and widening of the central office lot.

The work was made possible by additional funding that was approved last year by townspeople, he said.

There are two vacancies on the Region 9 board that Ward said he must fill.

“If anyone is interested, please call me at 562-7254,” he said.

Directors also briefly discussed the latest Maine Education Assessment test scores.

“I was especially pleased with the results, particularly our improvements in math and science at the middle school and at the high school,” Ward said.

Without releasing the results, he commended “all the hard work” by school staff in developing action plans to improve students’ test scores.

“It certainly paid off,” he added.

Tabled agenda items included proposed increases in school lunch prices, and appointments to school physician positions.

Rather than approve an across-the-board 25-cent increase in lunch prices, directors asked to see a financial report for the program at the board’s next meeting in September, Ward said.
