ROCKLAND (AP) – A convicted murderer serving a 28-year sentence had six months added to his term Monday for harassing his victim’s mother by sending her a photo of her dead son stuffed in a car trunk.
Steven Schoff, 32, who is at the Maine State Prison for the shooting death of Devin O’Brien at a Lyman gravel pit in 1996, was found guilty last week of sending a greeting card and photo to O’Brien’s mother, Debbie O’Brien of Kennebunk, in 2001.
Michael Willings, 32, who is serving five years for aggravated criminal mischief, had five months added to his sentence. Prosecutors said the men conspired to inflict pain on the O’Brien family, and that Schoff got Willings to mail the photo for him because Schoff was under court order not to have contact with O’Brien’s mother.
Knox County Superior Court Justice John Atwood said the mailing was premeditated, “designed to inflict pain,” and an act filled with ill-will and revenge.
“The two of you strike me as intelligent and articulate people,” Atwood said to the defendants. “There was no reason for this to happen.”
