DIXFIELD – A Main Street apartment sustained minimal damage during a fire Tuesday afternoon. Quick responses from the tenant and firefighters were credited with saving the building.

Chief Scott Blaisdell said Dixfield firefighters were called about 3:35 p.m. to a structure fire at 8 Main St., Apartment 2.

Tenant Debra Storer spotted a fire in the furnace room and called 911, reporting it to an Oxford County dispatcher in Paris.

Then, Blaisdell said, she ran 500 feet down the street to the Fire Department, where firefighters were already starting toward the scene.

“There was a furnace malfunction and a fire was burning out of the furnace into the furnace room,” Blaisdell said.

“The potential was there to lose the building, but luckily she made the right move and called the Fire Department, and they knocked it down before it got into combustibles.”

Peru and Rumford firefighters assisted in a mutual-aid response. Other responders included Med-Care Ambulance, and Mexico police Officer Roy Hodsdon and Dixfield police Officer Matt Noyes, who directed rush-hour traffic around the three firetrucks.
