Dear Sun Spots: Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin would appreciate your help in getting the word out about our next informational meeting for potential tutors. We have many students waiting for tutors, as well as a new teen-parent component of our family literacy program, which will require additional volunteers. Anyone who is interested in learning more about our programs is welcome to attend on Tuesday, Aug. 24, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Great Falls School, High Street entrance, Auburn. For more information, please call LV-A at (207) 753-1772. Thank you! – Tahlia Hope, Executive Director, Auburn.
• To Marilyn Kilgore, No Town, and Thomas A. Bogar, Washington, D.C. (Sun Spots’ requests July 28 and June 24):
Sun Spots spoke with W.D., in Lewiston who stopped by to chat about his memories of Phyllis Brown.
He says when he was growing up that Phyllis Brown lived in the house behind his family’s. W.D., and his family lived on Benson Street, at the time. Brown, he says, was very pretty and, he believes, a model with Powers Models. He recalls one of the ads she was in was for Chesterfield, and she wore a Robin Hood cap and carried a bow and arrow. He recalls that Brown and Gerald Ford were very close friends.
“From our back window, I saw Gerald Ford pick her up in his arms and throw her in the snowdrift.”
At the time, W.D. says Ford may have been a congressman.
Dear Sun Spots: I know this is a far-fetched request, but here goes anyway.
I am looking for the first knitting pattern I ever used. I am 95-percent sure it was Bernat, a black and white booklet, with all women’s sweaters. It was from the late 1950s to very early 1960s. Somehow the one I had disappeared. There are two patterns that will jump out at you that I can describe if someone out there thinks they might have it.
Also, I would be interested in any knitting patterns, especially older ones, that someone might like to get rid of. I’ll be happy to pay a reasonable price. I can be reached at (207) 375-8454. – No Name, Greene.
Answer: In addition to responses from readers, try contacting Bernat at their head offices at: 320 Livingstone Ave., South, Listowel, ON Canada N4W 3H3. It’s possible they may still have a copy of this booklet. It’s worth a try anyway.
Dear Sun Spots: Please help me again. Many months ago, I caught the end of a Martha Stewart segment when she talking about a Trinity bush with a garden. Can you please tell me what it is and where I can buy one? – Helen Wilson, No Town.
Answer: Sun Spots tried to find the bush you speak of but was unsuccessful. She contacted Martha Stewart’s customer service department, which advised you will need to provide more information in order for them to locate more information. For example: When did you last see the program? What other segments were on the program? Did a guest participate in the segment? If you have these answers, you can contact them directly yourself, via e-mail, at [email protected].
