LEWISTON – Conditions for two of three men critically injured in a violent crash Sunday afternoon on Route 17 in Roxbury have been upgraded.
A nursing supervisor at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston said late Friday night that Jason Hanson, 27, and Chad Roberts, 21, both of Lewiston, were in stable condition. Stephen Didonato, 26, of Portland, remained in critical condition, she said.
The three men and 20-year-old Chantelle Breton of Lewiston were injured when the 1996 Saturn that Hanson was driving, slammed head on into a bridge abutment Sunday afternoon.
Breton was treated and released at Rumford Hospital.
Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said Hanson was driving north to Coos Canyon in Byron, where the four were going swimming at the popular state picnic area on the Swift River.
Hanson lost control of the car on a curve, and the car hit a guardrail and the abutment, flipped at least twice and landed on top of the guardrail on the opposite side of the highway.
Hanson and Didonato were thrown from the car, McCausland said. Breton and Roberts had to be extricated by Rumford firefighters using hydraulic equipment.
State Trooper Kyle Tilsley is still investigating the wreck, which happened on newly paved road that was wet at the time.
McCausland said Hanson was apparently unfamiliar with the winding highway.
