FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) – Matt Light looks as if he has taken a cue from his last name, but the Patriots veteran left offensive tackle said he was at his playing weight Sunday as he practiced with the team for the first time since the opening of training camp.

“Do I look skinny? You guys are terrible judges of weight,” Light told reporters after Sunday’s practice, held in the field house at Gillette Stadium because of heavy rain overnight.

Light, listed by the team as 305 pounds, underwent an emergency appendectomy before the start of the team’s mandatory minicamp in June. He has confirmed that he lost “a lot of weight” after the surgery, with some reports saying he lost 25 pounds.

The team placed Light on the active physically unable-to-perform list before the start of training camp on July 29. He has spent all of camp participating in a conditioning and rehabilitation program, and got the green light to practice Sunday.

It will be some time, Light said, before he is ready to play in a real game.

“There’s going to be an adjustment period,” said Light, in his fourth NFL season out of Purdue. “I knew that coming into it.”

Light, the starter at left tackle in each of the Patriots’ two Super Bowl victories in the last three years, said he has tried to stay mentally on a par with his teammates during practices and meetings. But there’s no substitute for being on the practice field, he said.

“It’s all good to sit there and go through the mental part of practice, and watch the guys in front of you doing all the stuff, but when you’re out there, its all different,” he said.

While Light followed his rehabilitation program, the bulk of practice snaps went to Adrian Klenn, the second-round draft choice out of Hawaii in 2000 who was Bill Belichick’s first selection when he became coach of the Patriots.

Klemm started Friday night’s preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, a 24-6 New England victory, and played more than three quarters.

, but was assessed two penalties for lining up in an illegal formation.

It’s uncertain, but doubtful, if Light will see significant action in the Patriots’ next preseason game Saturday night at Cincinnati.

“By no means am I ready to go out and play a game,” Light said. “But I’m definitely ready to get back out there with the rest of these guys.”

The Patriots also welcomed wide receiver David Givens back to practice Sunday after two weeks of inactivity.
