RUMFORD – Athletes wishing to play football for Mountain Valley Middle School are asked to attend a meeting at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, in the auditorium at the middle school. The first practice will be at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 23. Those wishing to be part of the middle school cheering squad are asked to attend a meeting at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, at the middle school. Other sports will not begin until after the start of school.

Governor guest at breakfast

RUMFORD – Gov. John Baldacci will be the guest of honor at a fund-raising breakfast buffet hosted by the Oxford County Democratic Committee. It will be held from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at the Rumford Eagles Hall on Oxford Street. Donations to the Oxford County Democrats will be accepted at the door with suggested amounts set at $10 and seniors $5.

Mushroom walk

RANGELEY – The annual Mushroom Walk will be held at the Wilhelm Reich Museum from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22, as part of the Natural Science Sunday Workshop series. Returning as workshop leaders are Michaeline Mulvey and Ted Elliott, avid mushroomers and members of the Maine Mycological Society, an organization of professional and amateur botanists and mushroom aficionados. There is no charge to attend. Participants may bring field guides and magnifiers if they wish. The program will begin in the Sheltered Classroom and continue on the museum nature trails to observe and identify the many different mushrooms and enjoy the outdoors. The Wilhelm Reich Museum is on Dodge Road in Rangeley. The Natural Science Program is funded by a grant from the Wing-Benjamin Trust, by the Friends of the Wilhelm Reich Museum, and by individual donors. Democrats meeting

RUMFORD – The Oxford County Democratic Committee will hold a regional meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, at the Rumford Eagles Hall. It is hosted by state Rep. John Patrick, state Sen. Bruce Bryant, and Linda Petrie. Meetings are open to anyone interested in electing Democrats in the fall election, and will focus on planning activities and events before the Nov. 2 election.
