PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A state police trooper has been fired from her job, for past behavior that included admitting to drunken driving.

Eve Marani was fired following a reenlistment process that’s done every three years, according to state police Major Steve O’Donnell. He told WJAR-TV that Marani’s past behavior, including the drunken driving admission, factored into her dismissal. The firing cannot be appealed, WJAR reported.

Marani’s lawyer said the trooper wanted to stay on the job and had performed well, the station reported.

Marani was pulled over by East Greenwich police last February for allegedly driving her Saab on the wrong side of the road on Main Street. She refused to take a Breathalyzer at the scene, and later admitted to assaulting an officer.

A police review panel found Marani guilty on eight of nine charges, but reduced her punishment to a one-year, unpaid suspension. That prompted Col. Steven Pare, the head of the state police, to ask lawmakers for more authority to fire an officer involved with serious disciplinary matters.
