FARMINGTON – A memorial service to honor a hard-working public servant will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Community Center in Farmington.
Roger Perry died in July at age 69 and will be remembered by town officials and the community at the service. The public is invited, said Richard Davis, Farmington town manager.
In addition to remembrances by family, friends and town officials, the program will include fiddle music and refreshments, he said. Perry, he added, was one of the most dedicated public servants he has ever known.
Having moved to the area in 1988 after retiring as a physician, Perry became an active community organizer. He served on several municipal committees and boards – the Budget Committee, Zoning Board, Comprehensive Plan Implementation Committee, Recycling Committee and Transportation Advisory Committee, which he chaired.
He was also on boards of several private organizations, including MaineShare and SeniorsPlus. He worked at the state level on senior health issues and coordinated a project with Healthy Community Coalition to help seniors navigate statewide social services.
“He was also a tremendous gardener,” Davis said. Active with the Maine Organic Farmers and Growers Association, he appeared on a local public access television show called “The Dirt Gardener.”
Donations in Perry’s memory may be made to the Farmington Tree Reserve Fund and will be used to plant a tree, a living memorial, in town in his honor.
