WILTON – Planners approved an application for Gill Reed to move his welding manufacturing business from Farmington to the Old Bass Distribution Building on Weld Road when they met Thursday.
Reed, of Nichols Development, plans to bring other businesses into the building as well. The new business will be named the Nichols-Bass Business and Technology Center.
Reed said the business is mainly manufacturing. He said it custom-builds such items as utility trailers and log skidders that go behind ATVs.
Planners told Reed that any other business that comes in must come before the board before beginning operations there. Reed said the company will bring use-permit applications to the board for tenants.
Planners also gave their approval for Russell Black to construct an 82-by-125-foot farm building on a 140-acre lot. Planners said the building had to come before them because the area is zoned for farm and forests and will be bigger than 500 square feet. Black, who is a selectman and former chairman of the Planning Board, asked the board to be aware of any other such buildings. He said the code enforcement officer has approved them without coming before the board in the past.
Planners approved a use permit for Melinda and Albert Chouinard to operate a sports card shop. The Chouinards are leasing the old pool hall on Route 2 next to the Big Apple convenience store that will also be opening soon. The name of the business will be Lotsa Sports Cards.
Melinda Chouinard said they will be putting up two 8-foot picket fences at the front of the building, one on each side of the door, for aesthetics. The fences will be attached to the building. An open house will be held Sept. 1.
Planners also approved a use permit for Tammy Castonguay to operate a roadside hot dog and ice cream stand by Wilson Lake. The stand will be on the Bass Park side of the lake in the gravel parking area.
Planners approved the permit with the condition that selectmen also approve the idea. Selectmen approved of the business for the previous owner of the stand, but reserved the right to review it and stipulated that it would not be in use during the Blueberry Festival, held the first weekend each August.
The board reviewed two applications for an alternate member to replace Ted Keiler, who recently resigned. They will ask the applicants to attend the next meeting. Planners will then send their recommendation to the selectmen for appointment.
