BETHEL – Change may be coming to the intersection of Parkway and Route 2 in Bethel.
Parkway is a short road that connects Route 2 with Route 26.
Pending the outcome of a matter going before selectmen at 7 p.m. today, the cluttered, busy intersection could soon be sporting its first ever traffic signal.
A Maine Department of Transportation contractor has asked selectmen if the board is still interested in putting a signal at the intersection. If so, the town would assume responsibility for electrical service and maintenance of the signal.
Albert L. Godfrey Jr. of Casey and Godfrey Consulting Engineers in Gardiner said his firm is to provide design, right of way and utility coordination for the project.
Town officials have written to or met with MDOT officials several times since 1999, urging them to install a traffic signal at the visually-obstructed junction.
Traffic flows into the four-way intersection from three directions, two of which have two lanes. On the opposite side of the road, there are a pair of business entrances: Crossroads Diner and Deli and Rite-Aid Pharmacy.
Planned MDOT improvements include installation of a double-head wigwag beacon (flashing lights) and replacement of the painted southwest-bound Route 2 island with a more durable surface for traffic delineation.
Godfrey said the traffic signal would be linked to dynamic warning signs that would have to be installed near the Route 2 bridge over the railroad, given the intersection’s proximity to the sharp curve of Route 2 just to the southwest.
